Mac v.s. PC

Over the past few years, the Mac v.s. PC commercials have become extremely well known amongst computer users and the general public. Apple Inc. is an American corporation that creates computer and electronic software. Apple has products such as the Ipod, Iphone, Ipad, and the Macbook. Apple has created commercials, magazine ads, and website ads to help promote their products to the best of their ability. The Mac v.s. PC commercials are by far the most well known of the Apple advertisements and are able to be viewed at the Apple Website.

One of the most popular of all the Mac v.s. PC commercials is the "Viruses" thirty second trailer. The medium of the commercial is either a television or a computer because there is access to the commercial on websites. The commercial starts out with two guys standing next to each other, one is"Mac" and the other is "PC". The story line of this commercial is PC coughing because he has a virus, he tells Mac to stay away because he doesn't want to make Mac sick. Mac explains to PC that he doesn't get viruses and then Mac begins to wipe a tissue on PC's nose. The picture below is from the actual commercial and shows Mac trying to help PC, while PC is sick with a virus.

The audience of the commercial is anyone that has a television and the ad is being directed towards anyone that may have an interest in purchasing a computer in the future. Not only does the commercial advertise the Mac computers but it also advertises any other product that Apple has to offer because its getting the "Apple" name out there to consumers. Also, the main focus of the commercial is to inform the audience why Mac is so much better than PC. There are several different commercials for Mac v.s. PC, each one explains and compares why the audience should purchase a Mac over a PC. All of the commercials are also very sarcastic, which helps add some humor to the commercial. The importance of the commercial comparing the two is that it gives the audience, specifically a person that doesn't know much about computers, an instant opinion that Mac is superior to PC.

The immediate response to the commercial is that it's an Apple commercial marketing a Mac because the audience instantly sees the two guys, Mac and PC, standing next to each other. The roles of Mac and PC are played by Justin Long as Mac and John Hodgman as PC. The two men have became icons from the commercials. If the two happened to be walking down a street, most likely someone would recognize them as Mac or PC. Also, the background music has become well known and recognized as the Mac v.s. PC song. The emotional response to the ad would be that Mac is much more simplistic compared to PC. This is proven because in every commercial in the series Mac is dressed very casual and simple and PC is always wearing a suit or very nice expensive clothes. The picture below provides excellent proof to what the two men wear during their commercials.

The commercial has a common ground with just about everyone in the audience because just about everyone either has a television or access to a computer. The unique interpretation of the commercial would be that computer buyers should look into Mac when considering getting a computer because Mac is a new computer brand than PC. Also, everyone is very familiar with how PC's work and Apple created a different type of software that is much different than the PC's.

The ad has a very unique example of juxtaposition. The two men are completely different (Mac and PC) but they are standing right next to each other. PC tries to prove that he has all the capabilities that Mac has, while Mac constantly insists that PC isn't even comparable. The only constraint that comes to mind is that in a way Apple is advertising for PC. Although Apple is insisting how much better it is than PC, it still gives PC a name and some people could remember PC instead of Apple.

Personally, as a college student, I feel like I am definitely a part of the audience because I am a proud owner of a Macbook. As part of the audience I completely agree with the Mac v.s. PC commercial because everything that is stated in the ad holds true. Over the past 8 years I have owned two PC's and one Mac. There is no comparison, the Mac is by far a better computer and has all the features I could ever need. The commercial about viruses is a great comparison between the two because the PC's get tons of viruses and the Mac has virtually none. Before I purchased a Mac I was not sold on the idea of one and I was completely content with my PC. Not only has Apple convinced me to buy a Macbook, I have also purchased an Iphone and two Ipods.

I chose to analyze the Mac v.s. PC commercial because it shows directly what I personally saw over the years and I was on both sides of the commercial as a consumer. Being an owner of both Mac and PC gives me a unique view from both perspectives. As I stated before I was not on the band wagon of Mac at first because of how much different they are compared to PC's. The commercial definitely has helped me realize how great Mac's can be. So I can personally say I was sold on this ad.

  1. Out of curiosity which computer manufacturer do you prefer? Or which do you think is the better buy?

  2. I personally feel like Macs are much better, but thats just my opinion. I think buyers should go and test out both kinds of computers and pick out which one they like better
